Very very slow merger.. TN-Chennai circles was merged long back.. to be exact- on may 25th 2005.. the same day calls between paired circles became local, similiar merger took place.. Wonder why it took 1 full yr to do the same in mah-mumbai

Not slow actually.

It is an operator initiative. what happened in TN-Chennai was a mandated by the government. The government had vide its notification 842-503/2005-VAS/5 merged the two circles to one. While TN-Chennai is now a single license area, MH-Mumbai are still two distinct license areas. No mobile company can charge roaming rental for TN-Chennai if it holds the license for the combined circle, however, in case of MH-Mumbai though the calls between/to mobile were made local and incoming calls while roaming were made free the circles were still kept distinct. Hence, romaing still remains a VAS, and operators can charge rental for that.

What Airtel has done now is what Reliance and BSNL have been practising since the beginning.

Excatly, its the same for all GSM operators including hutch.. This 'One Maharashtra' scheme is actually nothing great..u jus save on rentals thts it.. and anyways these rentals on daily basis, so if u outta mumbai for 3 days.u ll b charged rental only for 3 days (there in airtel postpaid)..

CHeers!
