Ramchi 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2006 EDGE networks are capable of providing the above mentioned speeds but I am not sure about such network in India. These Metro based EDGE networks are providing WAP services. Apart from that Airtel provides EDGE PC card [which may not require a separate Mobile Phone] thru which you can browse internet with 1 GB limit but offers good speed. This is something like Reliance R Connect Card sold separately. As far as EDGE and R Connect card I do not see any big difference in the specifications. Even plans are also equally good or bad. With EDGE capable GSM Phones you can access some of the WAP sites thru mobiles for which Metro GSM providers charge Rs 100 per month for unlimited usage. This facility cannot be extended for connecting internet thru PC. EDGE Capable phones in GSM market is plenty. Examples: Nokia 6680, N70, N90, N80, Sony Ericsson: W810i. Some of these are between 15K-25K. Cheaper LG, Samsung models may also be available.
basant_jp 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2006 (edited) EDGE is available with Hutch and Airtel. And soon to be launched by BSNL and MTNL. Not sure about IDEA and other operators. Airtel offers the EDGE connectivity in major cities only, but Hutch has EDGE connectivity in metro as well as in most of the Tier II cities. I did not come across any plan form Airtel or Hutch in which you can use unlimited EDGE data for 100 rupees. It is expensive to use and is usually billed for per 10 KB on a prorata basis. Conecting your phone with PC for internet is very expensive. Since I have used Hutch for the same, I can give you the details of that. For prepaid, they charge a monthly rental of Rs 199 and thereafter 5 paise per 10 KB usage. For postpaid, they have three plans - Plan 1 is the same as prepaid, plan 2 is 499 monthly rental with 500 MBs data free and and thereafter 5 paise per 10 KB and Plan 3 is 699 monthly rental with 1 GB free and thereafter 5 paise per 10 KB. Some might see the plan 699 a good option but then unlike RIM's freedom plan (where u don't pay any voice rental for default plan), you have to pay for voice rental as well. I have used this service before and did not find the speeds better than Rconnect. More or less the same. And yes, EDGE (and 3G - WCDMA) ready Nokia 6630 is available in market for about 11.2K.
