KingofKalyan 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2006 Railway Stations to Get Cyber Cafes Techtree News Staff Jun 15, 2006 VSNL (Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited) is setting up cyber cafes at major railway stations across the country to create user-friendly public Internet access points. VSNL has been awarded franchisee rights for running of cyber cafes at 68 locations, in pursuance of the agenda outlined by Union Railway Minister, Laloo Prasad Yadav, in his Railway Budget for 2006-07. The first such cyber caf was inaugurated at the Bangalore railway station on June 14, by Shashi Kalathil, president of broadband and retail business, VSNL. Speaking at the occasion, Kalathil said that this effort will enable VSNL to implement the promise made in the Union Railway budget of setting up such cyber cafes across leading railway stations in the country. Kalathil said they are keen on making Internet easily available, so that passengers can stay connected even whilst on-the-move. The company plans to make all 68 cyber cafes operational in the next few weeks. All Tata Indicom dial-up Internet and broadband subscribers will be able to access this facility by using their existing accounts. According to VSNL, each of these cyber cafes will be equipped with around ten to 20 high-end multimedia PCs having flat panel monitors, plus all the cafes will remain open on a 24x7 basis. VSNL says that with these cyber cafes, passengers will now be able to avail Internet browsing and gaming facilities at highly affordable rates. Additionally, VSNL plans to offer value-added services such as printing, scanning, mobile charging, and CD writing through these cafes. Passengers can also use these cyber cafes for things like making onward bookings, checking bank statements, tracking investment portfolios, and making ISD calls, all at affordable prices. Over and above all this, Tata Indicom intends to create select areas in railway stations that are Wi-Fi enabled that provide wireless Internet access to passengers on their laptops or Wi-Fi enabled PDAs.
