Reliance Comm, Hutch to offer BlackBerry services

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 2006 01:09:11 AM]

MUMBAI: After Bharti, Hutchison Essar and Reliance Communications plan to start offering BlackBerry phones. While Hutch will be offering BlackBerry to its subscribers as early as next month, Reliance is likely to offer these within the next three months.

The tie-ups with more service providers is likely to provide a leg up to the sales of BlackBerrys in India.

According to industry sources, so far, over 40,000 BlackBerrys have been sold in the country since ’04 when the company entered into an exclusive tie up with Bharti Tele-Ventures. Officials at Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the BlackBerry phones, refused to disclose details of number of handsets sold.

The handset is relatively high priced with different models being priced in the range of Rs 14,000-30,000. “The running costs including the data charges each month work out to be expensive. Hence, it has found favour only among corporate customers so far,” sources added.

Reliance Industries had earlier entered into a deal with the Bharti group to sell 5,000 BlackBerry handsets. Besides, several other leading MNC banks are said to have bought BlackBerrys for their employees.

While the deals with Hutch and Reliance Communications is yet to be finalised, sources close to the companies confirmed the development. Hutch is expected to launch after a month, while Reliance will launch the service after three months. “A dominant part of our customer base are corporates and with this new service, we expect more corporates to switch to our network,” said sources close to Hutch.

Bharti will continue to offer Blackberrys, but it is no more an exclusive tie-up. RIM entered the Indian telecom market in association with Bharti in ’04.

BlackBerry enables mobile customers to access a premium range of applications including instant e-mail, corporate data, Internet surfing and a bouquet of personal information management features.

It is mainly targeted at professionals like bankers, lawyers, sales personnel, corporate executives and others who need to travel a lot, yet be in touch with the office. Incidentally, one of the recent launches of BlackBerry models, costing close to Rs 30,000, is available by invitation only.

Thats refreshing news, but again Reliance would most probably start with old Blackberry models like the 6750. Hope they would come up with 7130, 7250 or higher models !

Well yeah provided you're willing to shell out 20-40k!

Most telecos in the US build the price of the phone into the monthly charge. So the upfront cost is usually between $100-300 depending on the phone and the number of years contracted for (usually 1-2 years).

Will RIM do that? After 501 (remember that) probably not.

It is well known that Blackberry has CDMA phones too, Swaroop specifically asked about Blackberry Pearl (a new model from RIM), which does not seems to be available in CDMA so far...

I dont think backberries has any advantage except push mail.

Also blackberries do not support your existing POP / SMTP / IMAP4 accounts unless they have push mail support.

One of my frnd is using it on airtel and I thinks its sheer waste unless one belongs to a corporate which provides pushmail.

Ofcourse preferences are different. But I will never invest or buy any black berry.

Blackberry does support existing POP/IMAP email accounts, however to be able to use the push email support with POP/IMAP, you have to forward the account to default blackberry email account (although it won't be true push email as it synchronizes every 15 minutes).

Though I agree with you, other then email, there is just nothing appealing in Blackberries (atleast to me). Infact, I am pleasantly surprised with the push email client provided with the UTStracom PPC 6700, it works brilliantly and equally good as RIM's blackberry.

No...it's a paid service, and is included by UTStarcom for this phone as bundled software...If I remember correctly, the client on this phone is from Good Technology (http://www.good.com/corp/index.php).

Means it has to have support from receiving server too. Client may be installed but if server do not support it can not be sent. Correct me if I am wrong.

Just to know because I am gonna get one 6700 from US. THen will work on it to use :SI:

i recently configured my uncle's nokia e61 with blackberry's "blackberry connect" software. He got a blackberry mail address with it(not optional). However i managed to configure his pop3 account on it without any difficulty. People with many email addresses can forward their pop3 mails to the blackberry mail account to avoid cluttering up their phone with many inboxes.

Hey man.

I think Microsoft Based Products are Far Better than Blackberry.

We can very well set Gmail or Any Pop Based mail into PPC-6700 or Windows Mobile 5 Edition

I know the BlackBerry have Push mail but same is the Case fo other also.

Definately Blackberry Sole handset is very much Appealing but Win Mobile 5 with availability of more than 20000 Software to run on it makes it more Powerfull and Customisable.

Only Problem is the Bulkyness. But New Samsung BlackJaq, Moto Q, Samsung New SCG / SCH 760, Imate Jaq is the Slimmet we can have this Mobile with Same Punch of Processor Power. and Of Course Now Win Mobile is available in Wide Range of Fortune 500 Manufacturer.

Now Windows Mobile is Supported by HTC, HP-Compaq, UTStar, Samsung, Palm, Motorola, Dopod, LG (in Upcoming), Asus, Benq, Gigabyte, Sony (Sony vio Palm), Fujitsu & Toshiba in Japan

Windows is a Open Standard to Impletement so the Munufacturer get choice of Hardware, Chipset like MSM6500 to MSM7600 from Qualcomm, Processor from Texas Instruments, Samsung, Intel etc.

GPRS and EDGE is too slow with max speed of 236 K compared to 1.2 Mbps in HSDPA in USA.

Reliance Communications renews hope for BlackBerry devices....

Reliance Communications to provide Blackberry on CDMA

Financial Express - Friday, May 11, 2007 at 0000 hours IST

ORLANDO (FLORIDA), MAY 10: The increasingly ubiquitous BlackBerry may soon be available to CDMA subscribers in India. Waterloo (Ontario)-based wireless solutions provider Research in Motion (RIM) is in advanced negotiations with Reliance Communications to offer its CDMA subscribers a range of services on the BlackBerry platform.

“CDMA carriers in the US like Verizon have offered BlackBerry services for years. The technology issues have already been sorted out with Reliance. Now, the two sides just have to sit together and hammer out an agreement,” a source confirmed on the sidelines of RIM’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium being held in the balmy central Florida city.

News of the possible tie-up with Mumbai-headquartered Reliance Communications comes close on the heels of the launch by Hutch of BlackBerry Connect on a range of GSM devices.

BlackBerry devices and BlackBerry Connect is available through Bharti Airtel as well.

Devices enabled with BlackBerry Connect can support push-based wireless email with attachment viewing and other features through the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Server.

“India is one of the most strategic markets in the world for us. I personally deal with Sunil Bharti Mittal and those that run other carriers.
