Indonesia quake triggers tsunami, 5 dead

Monday, July 17, 2006 (Jakarta):

A powerful earthquake sent a three-metre high tsunami crashing into a beach resort on Indonesia's Java island, killing at least five people and causing extensive damage to hotels and houses. People fled to a local hill to escape the wave on Pangandaran beach in west Java, a woman who identified herself as Teti told el-Shinta radio station.

"All the houses have been destroyed along the beach," she said. Indonesian President Susilo Yudhoyono has also confirmed the tsunami.

High intensity quake

The tsunami followed a 7.2-magnitude quake that struck deep beneath the Indian Ocean, 240 kilometres southwest of Java's western coast at 3:24 pm (1354 IST), causing tall buildings to sway as far as capital Jakarta. It was followed by a 6.1-magnitude aftershock two hours later.

Transport Minister Hatta Radjasa said he had heard reports about a tsunami striking two seaside towns, and urged people living on Java's southern coast to move inland in an orderly fashion.

"Everyone should move away from the beach," he said.

Some offices in Jakarta have also been evacuated. India has issued a tsunami warning for its Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which are located west of Indonesia. However, the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a widespread destructive tsunami.

2004 tsunami

On December 26, 2004, a quake measuring 9.0 on the open ended Richter scale occurred off the coast of northern Sumatra. A displacement of the tectonic plates will always generate a wave at the surface of the ocean - a so-called tsunami. In this case, the tectonic plates were estimated to have been displaced as much as 30 metres. Thus, the energy released was equivalent to 10.000 Hiroshima atomic bombs. (With AP inputs)

Heard this Tsunami won't affect India and is safe here, as quoted by an official in the ministry. Well, Indonesia is always at the receiving end when Tsunamis occur in that part of the world :(

Tragedies like Tsunami should not occur anywhere. As big tragedies like Tsunami puts the country a decade back.

May God bless all.
