Should We Dump our TV Tuner Cards

Recommended Posts

Hello all my dear friends,

As you are aware that from 1st January 2007, CAS (Conditional Access System) is going to be implemented in the four Metros i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata & Chennai.

My question here is that all the PCTV (internal TV Tuner Cards) will work on CAS or not? As maximum of the TV Tuner cards are analogue (like of Pinnacle & Pixel View) and the signals which we receive from the Set Top Box under CAS will be digital. Should we have to dump the TV Tuner Cards in the dustbin, as there is no feature in them which can convert the analogue signals to the digital.

Or they (TV Tuner cards) can receive the digital signals and send analogue signals to the PC ? What will happen ? Can anyone have idea ? :):(:(:help:

Please post your comments.

Regards.

@prathod

No its not possible, as we receive only digital signals from the Set Top Box. And digital signals will be forwarded to the TV or PC via the set top box.

In that case we would have to dump the existing ones and go for digital tv tuner cards,pinnacle has it i believe,I dont think any company would come out with convertors or something like that,bcoz they wont earn much out of it.

maybe the govt may postpone cas,but still ur question is valid and remains there.

1 Set Top box can be used to connect one tv only so for using it with a tv tuner which we use as additional tv, we will need another set top box, plz correct if I am wrong...

@imranais

I think we can connect more than 1 TV with single Set Top Box, but with the same channel can be viewed on each TV. (that means we can't watch different channels on different TVs).

I think Set top box may also have multiroom option like Tata Sky but that will be charged extra :) .

But even in Tata Sky u have to buy multiple digicomps, here is what Tata Sky site says:

Here’s how it works:

Get multiple digicomps one for each TV (Mutiroom works for up to 4 televisions)

Choose a package as the primary subscription for any one television

Choose mutiroom subscription for additional TVs at a very nominal cost

Enjoy all the channels in the package selected on all televisions

@Honest: I dont think so that may be the scene that u can view only one single channel like u said, maybe maybe not...

I don't know about Tatasky but when I enqured with DishTV, that's what they told me...you can connect 2 TVs, but you have to watch the same channel on both.

You will not need to dump your PC cards, as you might be getting digital signals from cablewalla, the set-top box will convert the signals to analogue - which is understood by most of the TVs out there. And if didn't do that, most of us would have to change our TVs too. THE STBs will provide an output in the form of Audio/Video out (As in DVD players) as well as RF-Out.

However, if you need to watch different channels on different TVs, yo will need to get as many STBs and pay for as many connections. The days of one cable-connection and n-number of TVs are over.

The above is true, We in Chennai are having STBs since July 2003 and if you use multiple TVs for one STB, all TVs will have to see the same channel only. As for the TV tuner cards, I dont foresee any problem in connecting the STB to it. It should work and as Puneet already said, we would have had to change all our TVs also if it were true.

So, do not as yet dump your TV Tuner cards for now. Maybe you can seel it to places other than the metros for a song.

Thanks

Is there any guy from Chennai who is using PCTV cards (Pinnacle / Pixel View) with CAS. As we all know that CAS is already implemented in Chennai.

If anyone using TV Tuner cards with Set Top Box, then please mention if the card itself convert the digital signals to analogue or not. Or which make of the card are you using ?

I think..not sure though:

"A set-top box is needed only if you you want pay-channels. For viewing free to air channels, there is no need of using STB...you can directly connect the cable to your TV without the box"

Can anybody using CAS confirm whether the above is true? ...I mean, just connect the cable directly to your TV and check whether you are able to view any channels?

^^^ Even for watching Free to Air channels u require a set top box.

And they would not be completely free, one has to pay Rs.77 + taxes to watch the Free to Air Channels...

The question here is that STB will provide only digital signals and maximum TV Tuner cards are analogue. Anybody using STB in chennai can u tell us that older models of pctv tuner cards are working with STB's or not ?

@amtraq,

You are absolutely right. STB is not required for viewing F2A channels. You can connect right to the computer just like you would connect to a TV.

@imranais,

You do not require a STB for viewing F2A channels. But yes you are right that for viewing F2A, we have to pay Rs 80 per month. One has to understand that a lot of cabling and equipment is required for transmission of all channels and hence this cost is charged.

And yes most of the Chennaites are very content paying just Rs 80 pm instead of Rs 250 to Rs 300 pm for viewing only Tamil Channels, which are now free under CAS. Only the likes of Star, Zee and Sony are pay channels apart from sports channels. So Chennaites do not miss the pay channels at all as it is very cheap for them to view the F2A channels only as compared to their counterparts in the rest of the country.

Hello all my dear friends.

As we all are aware that by now CAS is implimented in all the four metros. Many of our Rimweb members live in these metros and may be using old TV Tuner cards like Pinnacle or Pixel View. CAS is going to be implemented in my locality by 15th January 2007.

As the doubt about the Free to Air channels already cleared by khs123 (rimweb member), but the doubt about Pay Channels still exists in my mind.

So, if any member using old TV Tuner Cards with CAS, can throw some light on it than it will be very beneficial for all of us.

Just tell us, if these TV Tuner cards works with CAS or not.

By that I mean, would we be able to view Pay Channels which comes to our computer only through STB ?

Are STB converts digital signal to analogue, to be viewed on computer ?

Regards.
