niket 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2004 Train reservation on Reliance mobile now. Source: Rediff, April 20, 2004 12:03 IST Last Updated: April 20, 2004 12:16 IST Reliance Infocomm, the CDMA mobile phone operator, has joined hands with Indian Railways to offer for the first time train reservation facility on its Reliance IndiaMobile. RIM subscribers across the country would be able to book train tickets through the R-World on their mobile phones once this service was launched within a few weeks, Mahesh Prasad, president (application solution group), told PTI in Kolkata. He said Reliance Infocomm was working with the Indian Railway's wing, which offers train reservation via Internet, to make this service work on the RIM and the process was in advance stage of implementation. "We will be using the existing Internet platform for train bookings but the user interface will be further simplified so that the subscribers can book a ticket in two to three screens operation," Prasad said. The soft test of the new service has already been done and after a few more tests the system will be ready for launch, he said, adding the payment can be made through credit cards for which discussions with banks were on. He said the R-World application, which has already become hugely popular with RIM subscribers, has several services and "we are working furiously to add more interesting services in the days to come." To a query Prasad said R-World, which is currently available free to the RIM subscribers, is generally getting hits upward of 1 billion every month and expressed confidence that its popularity would not decrease once it becomes a paid service in a few months. He said currently more than 120 applications are available on R-World which include current events and news, travel and city guide, video clippings and movie trailers. rajatng 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2004 Why does'nt Reliance create Location Dependent Services (LBS). If this service is available in only 3-4 cities, then why show such a menu to the whole world? LBS is quite easy to create and RIM does have the necessary information in database for this. Just show the menu depending on the users current location. Even I tried using this service and was surprised(??) at why I didnt work. At the time, I thought that this is also in beta stage as is everything in RIM. Thought that maybe it will start working when I check it again after a few days. Thanks Chirag for this information or else I would have checked this every 2-3 days for the status of my train tickets.

Honourable Railway Minister Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav inaugurated the service. Mr. M.N. Chopra, Managing Director, IRCTC, who was present at the inauguration said, “With a view to extend access to a larger customer base, IRCTC sought to implement other means of providing access - those that would be more easily available to customers. With the mobile revolution in India, large numbers of potential customers, who may not have ready access to Internet now have access to mobile phones. IRCTC, therefore, developed a system, whereby mobile service operators could access IRCTC's rail reservation services.” Easy menu-driven navigation of the application on R World makes train ticket booking on RIM the most convenient option anywhere, anytime, bringing online reservations to millions of mobile phones, without the need to look for PCs or Internet connections. Customers can pick their travel destinations, class of travel, intermediary stops, without having to remember train numbers, station codes and reservation codes while booking their rail tickets on this R World application. “We are proud to be associated with IRCTC in their maiden initiative which offers the most convenient way of booking the train tickets through mobile phones. This facility on R World provides access to millions of new users who have not registered with IRCTC, and allows them to make reservation through RIM. With a customer base of over 8 million users, Reliance Infocomm offers immense potential to this unique initiative from the IRCTC,” says Mahesh Prasad, President Applications & Solutions Group, Reliance Infocomm. R World offers the convenience of PC-like interactivity and easy navigation on mobile handsets, where all train routes and their corresponding train numbers can be accessed. It not only displays both availability and fare in real time, but also offers availability of seats for all 5 days around the desired date of travel. RIM subscribers can use credit cards to book the ticket. “This service is currently available to RIM customers using colour handsets in New Delhi & NCR. It will progressively be made available even on the black & white handsets and subsequently activated in all other cities in keeping with the rollout plans of IRCTC,” added Mr. Prasad. Since the Java-enabled feature has download speeds of up to 144 kbps, R World applications are quick to download with no restrictions on text matter. The R World applications suite currently has over 100 applications ranging from interactive Guides such as TV programme guides and City Guides, Live News and TV news clips from channels like NDTV, CNBC, Aaj Tak and India TV to contests, Songs, Ring Tones, Cricket Information and women's world. Chirag 5 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 Now, rail tickets on mobiles September 09, 2004 17:33 IST Rediff.com Rail tickets can now be booked on mobile phone, with the Railways on Thursday launching a new cellphone-based ticketing service. Inaugurated by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, the new facility will be available on Hutch and Reliance cellphone services under the aegis of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. To be provided in the National Capital Region on a pilot basis for trains running from and to Delhi, the service will be expanded to 120 cities in the country. Payment will be through credit card. While on Hutch, the facility is voice-based and is provided through their '123' value-added service, a Java-based booking service is being offered by Reliance through their 'R' world service. "Ticketing was being done through the Internet. But limited number of people have access to Internet. On the other hand, mobile phones are very common and almost everybody has it," Lalu said, while unveiling the new facility. The minister also described the launch of the new service as a "farewell" for around 9000 rail travel agents. "We will now be saved from the menace of touts," he said. Yadav also announced that the government was considering introduction of a credit-card based sale of rail tickets at the reservation counters. Earlier, announcing the new facility, IRCTC managing director M N Chopra said the Railways had asked all cellphone companies to be part of the new service. "To begin with, Hutch and Reliance are providing the service. Hopefully, other mobile companies will come forth and we also expect the facility to be made available on landline phones," Chopra said.
