Arun 795 Report post Posted May 10, 2004 Yesterday night, our server experienced a Denial of Service (DoS) attack which was the cause of the initial downtime. A DoS attack is when a malicious user sends useless network traffic to a server causing legitimate traffic to be ignored. After receiving help from the datacenter to thwart the attack, software on the server was upgraded in order to help prevent additional attacks. This upgrade required a server reboot. After some time, the server was experiencing problems with the newly installed software upgrades. It is still under investigation, and hopefully will be resolved soon. Will update you as I get more information our Data Center (The Panet, Dallas).

StaticElectricity 8 Report post Posted May 10, 2004 Hope theres someway to keep an archive of our site!! No mood to lose the tonnes of information collected on this site, generated by all of us!! a DoS attack does not destroy data. it only floods the Server with useless queries which increases the load on the server thus the server cannot function properly .. i.e. it cannot keep up with the flow of data .... just as if u run too many applications on u'r pc at the same time.. but indeed some kinds of attacks do destroy data. Arun 795 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 Hope theres someway to keep an archive of our site!! The whole site including the forum (with database) is backed up weekly. So in case of a data loss, we can loose only one week's of data.
iiii_pretender_iiii 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 Well actually like static said, A DOS attack wont lead you to lose data... It will deny any legitimate connections to the server, thus the server will not be able to provide service, but all the data is still going to be present on the server. It just wont be able to provide service.
