Professionally, I am not even remotely related to Computers so I think it will be tough for me, However, I am ready to take a shot at it. So can anyone please tell how to go about it? I mean should I download from the net? If so which is the best one? I mean Ubuntu, Fedora. There are so many and I have no idea what it is all about. spdf 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2007 As you are going Linux for the first time, download Ubuntu(http://www.ubuntu.com/). Its just a 1CD download. You can use that as Live CD and then if satisfied(you sure will!) can install on Hard-Disk. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Kunal Hemrajani 1 Report post Posted January 8, 2007 yeah..go for Ubuntu.. u dun need to install it.. jus download it frm the above link.. they wil provide u the boot cd.. frm which u can boot ur sys in Linux.. So again came back to PCLinux. Download either the minime copy, with basics, and then download the required software, or else, if u have net connection problem, then download the bigdaddy version for fully loaded OS. Already changed the settings in Bios but to no avail still it normally boot from hard disk! So i dropped that idea of trying linux now this thread has invoked me again! Anyone for help??? linuxguy 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2007 (edited) Different distros for different people. You have to try out several distributions before settling down with one. Obviously it depends on what you wanna do with it that will decide whether you should use it or not. A few examples: 1. Ubuntu, Mandriva - Desktop user 2. Fedora - All rounder 3. Debian, Slackware - advanced users interested more in setting up servers 4. Gentoo - Tweakers delight! But requires heavy bandwidth for downloading source packages There are several others but these are the most popular ones. Since you say you're not related to the computing industry, I guess Ubuntu or Mandriva should do the job for you. Also remember, an OS is generally made up of two parts - Kernel and Shell. Incase of any Linux OS, Linux is the kernel while the Shell is GNU. Now different communities add their own unique features to the shell as well as the kernel and release their own version ( distribution ) of GNU / Linux hence we have Redhat, Fedora, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Debian etc... Edit: Some of the distribution ( like Ubuntu ) can be first run off a CD which is quite useful if you just wanna try out the distro before actually installing it on your harddisk...! tanveer 59 Report post Posted January 22, 2007 Ok Time to revive his thread. D/L ubuntu 6.06 and installed dual boot with win XP already present on my system. Tell me where can I get the softwares that will work on this OS. Also how do I install software? I mean I dont understand the formats gz and bz2. Also I have some problems with paritioning as well. If you want command line installer i.e. If you want a graphical installer then I'm not sure since I am a fedora guy You dont need to worry about .gz or .bz2 .
