A tough competitor to Blackberry and other Smartphones indeed. But I read that only Apple can add software to the phone, which is a serious shortcoming. Apple said no comments about developing software., so it isn't sure whether custom software can be developed. Another thumbs down is that it is not 3G ! It costs around Rs.27,000 (US$ 600) in the US, so if it is released in India, that should cost around Rs.40,000 if it is launched now. If this product is any success into the well saturated mobile market, the credit would go to the hype and marketing of Apple, not because it is superior to any other.

Today, at Macworld 2007 Apple announced the long-awaited iPhone - a widescreen iPod, a mobile phone, a mobile Internet terminal, a digital camera and a portable PIM organizer all-in-one. Some of the most exciting features of the iPhone include the OS X it runs on and touchscreen control with multi-finger gestures with no need for a stylus whatsoever.

Equipped with 4 or 8GB of integrated memory, the Apple iPhone has got more than the needed storage space to bring your photos, videos and music to life straight into your palm. It's much like iPod in that respect and features a large 3.5" touchscreen TFT display with a resolution of 320x480 pixels. But unlike an iPod it can take pictures with the integrated 2 megapixel camera. It even has an accellerometer which allows it to tell whether you are holding the device in landscape or portrait mode so that it can turn the display orientation correspondingly. And all that mobile virtuosity comes at the meager thickness of 11.6 mm.

A quad-band GSM/EDGE mobile (sorry, no 3G/HSDPA support), the iPhone is a truly amazing smartphone that can not only make and receive calls, but can also store your contacts, tasks, notes, calendar events, etc., as well as synchronize them seamlessly with the PC. If that's not enough the device also has Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) and Bluetooth 2.0 support. Some sweet highlights of the device are the Proximity sensor, which turns the display off when you lift the iPhone to your ear, as well as the Ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the display's brightness.

The other strengths of this multimedia device are more or less Internet-oriented, since the iPhone offers exceptional web browsing capabilities thanks to the Safari web browser with integrated Google search plus the Google Maps application that can take you all over the world - unfortunately without a GPS receiver. The user experience can be further enhanced through the use of various widgets, well-known and loved by all users of the Mac OS X.

Apple would be offering the iPhone to end customers in USA through the Cingular networks. Unfortunately, the device is expected to become commercially available in June 2007 only after it's approved by the FCC. Market availability in Europe is expected no sooner than Q4 2007, and as late as early 2008 in Asia. Initial pricing in Cingular networks will be 499$ for the 4GB model and 599$ for the 8GB one - both with a two-year contract.

Yeah the boss of cingular was talking bout how he's bent Apple to be the exclusive service provider. So dont expect any CDMA versions soon. Also rumour is that by the time of the European launch the phone will have 3G capabilities. Mind you of course that Cingular uses different 3G technology (HSDPA) in its GSM as compared to most of Europe and Asia which uses UTMS/WCDMA.

Arun: While the details about the application support are pretty sketchy.... since it runs on OS X will it run some of the existing desktop aps?? But I think the whole concept of widgets is to extend the functionality of the device. Locking it would be pretty stupid and pretty difficult. Of course then again US mobile service providers are like that only. I doubt if the the "international" versions would have any software locks.

OS X

All the power and sophistication of the world’s most advanced operating system — OS X — is now available on a small, handheld device that gives you access to true desktop-class applications and software, including rich HTML email, full-featured web browsing, and applications such as widgets, Safari, calendar, text messaging, Notes, and Address Book. iPhone is fully multi-tasking, so you can read a web page while downloading your email in the background. This software completely redefines what you can do with a mobile phone.

HP dude: CDMA not happening for the iPhone. Unless they release a 2nd model and work around their existing cellphone contract with Cingular. But I doubt it. They're going to go GSM all the way on this... no matter what the market dynamics in USA is.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2082059,00.asp

When asked about a give-and-take leading to the Apple-Cingular partnership, Lurie said, "I'm not sure we gave anything." Later, he commented, "I think they bent a lot." That bending included allowing the phone to be locked to Cingular, just one of several restrictions on the new iPhone. Press reports today said the phone will not accept third-party applications, though Apple may allow third parties to program mini-application "widgets."

"If you want an iPhone, you are going to get the luxury of being on the Cingular network," Lurie said.

iPhone only have

GSM + GPRS + EDGE (Multi Channel GPRS)

But lacks WCDMA, HSDPA

and Believe all High Users in USA now have Shofted to 3G

I dont Understand If this Music Phone have to DOwnload Music from Net It must Support 3G Network for Download and Uploading Multimedia Content

Cingular is Releasing HSDPA 3G in So many Prime Area in Eastern US (New York, New Jersy and Other Highly Populated area.)

Comming with a New Product which is a True Multimedia Products and Does Support 3G is not a wise Move.

Another Thing this Products run on UNIX, not on Linux Stripped, or WM5 or Symbian

and No Software Enhancement is available in this Range.

Yes This Phone is Greate for Youngsters but Not enough for Tommorows World.

Apple Must have to come with another Version with HSDPA or EVDO in Future

I know a lot of people keep complaining about it... but I dont understand why lack of HSDPA would be a deal killer for the phone.

3G in USA is very limited. Infact most of the PDAs - Palm & Blackberry didnt have 3G till late 2006. Verizon (and I'm sure many other operators there) limits (or at least did limit till very recently) 3G access to your phone ONLY, i.e. you cannot use it as a freaky fast modem for your computer/laptop. Given how restricted that scenario is... I can't see why you'd take 3G services in USA in the first place unless you were really keen on watching streaming videos on a teeny screen.

Question really is... how well does it handle Word, Excel and other productivity aps!

An Korean Answer to American

The LG KE850, also known as "Prada phone" has a large touchscreen display and strikingly resembles the recently announced Apple iPhone. We don't know much about the technical specifications of the new LG phone, but some leaked photos of the interface look quite similar to what we have seen on the Apple iPhone presentation last week. Here is the short presentation of the LG KE850 from the iF design award web site...

and This is the Finish answer to American

The Nokia "Aeon"

I try not to make a habit of ripping ideas from other sites' articles, but it's oh so worth it this time:

aeon.jpg

The Nokia "Aeon"?

Nokia maintains a Research and Development website that is usually filled with, well Research and Development stuff. Mostly it's just boring images of scientists and r&d people at work - at least until you scroll to the top. That's where the images of Nokia's latest "research concept" phone are currently housed.

aeon2.jpg

The "Aeon" seems to be your "typical" razr-thin candybar form factor cell phone with no actual buttons. No, it's not the next generation of Nokia's L'amour Fashion Collection. The bottom half of the prototype pictured here is actually a touch-screen display that can change (I might be going out on a limb here) into any kind of menu, button, keypad, whatever. It's so damn cool that I'm almost speechless. I mean, yeah, the touch screen method brings up a ton of quirky problems - like causing damage to the display with those pointy thumbs of yours, among others - but it's also so innovative and (brilliantly simple) that I can't even associate it with the Nokia name. What happened to those super thick oversized fatso phones that Nokia keeps churning out?

So the Aeon got me pretty excited about what's coming in the future of wireless technology. Of course, by the time this phone actually comes to market (if ever), I'm sure Motorola will have similar devices available, all with those really annoying vowel-less names that nobody wants to pronounce. I really hope their next set of phones are called KRPR or something. It'd be more fitting.

Featuring a streamlined display with "concealed" keypad, the KE 850 clearly differentiates itself from all other existing products on the market. The "buttons" on the 3-inch touch screen are operated by touching the LCD screen directly with your finger. To create a sense of luxury, we used a leather case to contrast with the high glossy black and metal texture deco. Duplicate injection technology was used for the display screen, and the body deploys glass fiber to reinforce the strength.

I heard Aeon is using 'Fuel Cell' Technology for powering the device. No more batteries instead look for methonol!

Getting Power from Fuel Cell is Possible but it Generates Smoke and Heat. Fuel cell can easily used in Cars but Cooling Devices there is very much Efficient.

People misunderstand Fuel Cell with Normal Cells.

Fuel cell is higher Concentrated Fuel Unit but to Transfer it into Action or Energy Require Engine.

As far my understanding goes it generates only electricity NOT heat! Since the output of the electrolite process is water, cooling process will not be that difficult (if over heating is an issue).

Only issue with Fuel Cell was large scale distribution of fuel cell and performance in terms of how long each refuel lasts.
