vmsanghrajka 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2007 According to reports, Idea Cellular will soon be operating in two more circles; namely Mumbai and Bihar. The company has received a letter of intent (LoI) from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for a new UAS license for launching its mobile GSM service in the Mumbai circle, which includes Goa as well. Besides, it has also received a license for launching its service in the Bihar circle, including Jharkhand. In a statement, Sanjeev Aga, Managing Director of Idea Cellular, said that they are currently present in 11 circles in the country, and in September last year, they launched services in three new circles that is UP (East), Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. With the latest additions, the number of circles they would be operating in will go up to 13. Meanwhile, the company has already applied to DoT for licenses to start its services in Karnataka, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, and Jammu and Kashmir. According to official sources, the government will release some fresh spectrum sometime in February-March, and Idea Cellular is expecting to enter a few more circles with this additional spectrum. Aga further said the company would adopt a two-pronged strategy in bringing subscribers within its fold in Bihar and Mumbai. At about 6 to 7 per cent, cellular penetration in Bihar is half the national average of 14 per cent. So there is an unpenetrated market in the state, which gives Idea scope for growth. Whereas, in Mumbai, the teledensity is about 50 percent, which is almost four times the national average, and is estimated to grow beyond 100 percent over a few years. Aga said they plan on addressing this market with efficiency and innovation.
