hritik123 4 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 RCOM to offer Yahoo Instant Messenger Mithun Roy Wednesday, January 17, 2007 22:08 IST MUMBAI: Anil Ambani controlled Reliance Communications and Yahoo India have finalised an alliance to offer Yahoo Instant Messenger for Reliance Mobile customers across the country. Highly placed sources at the company’s Ballard Estate headquarters said it was likely to make an official announcement sometime this week. The Mobile Instant Messenger offering on Reliance mobiles is Yahoo’s first Wireless Village compliant implementation in Asia. The service has been developed by ACL Wireless for Reliance and Yahoo. After SMS and MMS, one can now use mobile phones for mobile instant messaging (MIM), which offers chat instantly with anyone using cell phones similar to popular instant messengers on computers. Users can even see their friends’ online and chat in groups. Reliance Communications will be the first telecom service provider in the world to offer MIM across Java, BREW and WAP phones on a mobile operator network. Reliance Mobile customers can now chat live not only among themselves but also with any Yahoo IM user in the world using PCs. When a Reliance subscriber is not online on his mobile, he is notified by messages in his SMS inbox about new IMs received. Industry experts vouch for MIM’s rapid growth in India, due largely to the low penetration of PCs in the country. The percentage of mobile users with MIM-capable phones will grow to 62% in 2010, they say. All the other GSM operators including BSNL, MTNL, Bharti Airtel, Hutch-Essar, Idea, Aircel, Spice and BPL, are expected to commercially launch this service in the country next month. The service is already available in Europe, China and Turkey and would be launched this year in Hong Kong, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
