Microsoft's Crossbow a Draw in 2007

analysts are now expecting that "Microsoft's (MSFT) next cut of its mobile operating system, codenamed "Crossbow," will arrive sometime in the middle of next year. Some industry pundits are predicting email, security, and communications upgrades in the revised Windows Mobile platform when it arrives."

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney said, "If it is announced at the end of the year, which is my prediction, then shipment won't be until mid-2007."

Jack Gold at J.Gold Associates agreed and said, "Last I heard it was still scheduled for the end of year."

Dulaney predicted CrossBow "will try to address some of the weaknesses he sees for enterprise users in Windows Mobile 5.0." He said, "First priority should be to upgrade the email client and security, which today is very weak relative to BlackBerry."

Dulaney also advised that "they must also fix the communications subsystem." He said, "It's about where Windows 2000 was before Windows XP was introduced for mobile notebooks."

Todd Kortsaid, "One of the goals of Microsoft is to minimize -- or eliminate -- the distinction between the Windows Mobile 5 profiles for PDAs and smartphones. I don’t know if this will favor touchscreens or keypads, or make them equally available to both types of devices."

Some Major Works done in Windows Mobile 6

The new version of operating system is destined to fill the time gap between Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile Photon (Windows Mobile 7.0?). Truly significant updates are few, which, on top of that, are aimed at reacting to the change in the market environment. Early in 2007 Microsoft is thoroughly revamping its software range with Windows Vista, Office 2007, MS Exchange 2007. Therefore, against such impressive background an updated version Windows Mobile was simply bound to come out.

The manufacturers are getting RTM version of Windows Mobile Crossbow in November, 2006 – in light of this fact we predict first devices running on WM 6.0 to be released by the end of 2Q, 2007. The list of companies ready to upgrade old devices up to WM 6.0 includes only HP and E-Ten for the time being.

Launch of devices based on Windows Mobile Crossbow will strengthen Microsoft’s position on the market of enterprise devices, as Windows Mobile-powered solutions, sooner or later, will be treated as complementary products with MS Exchange. Most of new features found in the new operating system are targeted at providing smoother integration with MS Exchange 2007.

• Encryption – bundled memory card encryption
  

Regrettably, this world lacks miracles and this case is just another proof of that. The system still doesn’t offer support for several active windows in Internet Explorer, so that you are limited to a single window at a time, also profiles are missing in WM; the office applications haven’t been enhanced either. Nor were the multimedia tools. What the company has really got to do is keep on tuning Office Mobile, extending Windows Live, release Windows Media Mobile 11 and so on.

Microsoft's finally ready to take the wraps off Windows Mobile 6, the long-awaited successor to Windows Mobile 5 (what else?) that's been baking in the oven for a while now as "Crossbow." The platform formerly known as Pocket PC Phone Edition has become Windows Mobile 6 "Professional," while its more pocketable little brother, the Smartphone, has become "Standard" and plain ol' Pocket PCs are "Classic."

Major new features include:

- HTML support in email

- Windows Live for Windows Mobile

- File transfer capability in Windows Live Messenger

- New versions of mobile Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with rich editing

- Remote wipe capability for stolen and lost devices

- Call history in contact cards

- Tight Vista integration

- "Calendar ribbon" for more easily viewing schedule by day or week

- New versions of .NET Compact Framework and SQL Server built-in
