Reliance to Launch WiMax Services!

Soon - likely next month (June), Reliance Communications (RCom) will launch its wireless broadband technology aka WiMax in Pune and Bangalore, says a Times News Network (TNN) report.

The report further says that Reliance will extend its WiMax service to other cities, including Hyderabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Mumbai, after taking stock of customer response in these two cities.

Other major telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, VSNL, and BSNL have tested WiMax, and are also mulling roll-out in the near future as per sources in-the-know.

However, as of now, only Aircel Cellular has launched WiMax services for business customers in Chennai.

Targeted at nearly 3 million wireless Internet users, the RCom WiMax service, the company believes, will give it a first-mover edge over other players in the industry.

An industry expert reportedly said that unlike wireless fidelity or WiFi, where radio waves can cover up to 30 meters, WiMax services are accessible for over 10 miles, theoretically speaking at least. WiMax offers better mobility to users, without having to be connected by wires to service operators.

“Unlike wireless fidelity (wi-fi), where radio waves can cover up to 30 meters, WiMax services are accessible for over 10 miles in theory. WiMax is offering better mobility to the users without being connected by a wire to a service operator. Indian wireless market, which is growing rapidly by 40%, is expected to react positively to the new technology,” said an industry expert.

“RCOM can launch the unlicensed version of WiMax service anytime as it has completed all the tests. The initial launch will be in Pune and Bangalore and later move to other cities. BSNL is also looking to launch its WiMax service in Pune,” said a sources close to the development. But RCOM spokesperson refused to comment on the development.
