Reliance bags marketing & distribution deal for Apple

NEW DELHI: Reliance Retail has clinched an exclusive marketing and distribution deal with the $19.3-billion iconic maker of iPods and Mac computers, Apple, for standalone iStores. This is Reliance Retail’s first exclusive alliance with an international brand. The partnership was sealed on Monday. The first store, to be called iStore by Reliance Digital, will come up by October-end in Bangalore.

This is the first time Apple is tying up with a big corporate house for distribution anywhere in the world. The iStores would be standalone stores selling Apple products ranging from Macintosh computers to iPods and later, once it’s launched in India, the latest cult offering from Apple, the iPhone.

The standalone store, which will be opened just ahead of Diwali, will be spread over 2,000 sq ft and is currently under construction. Globally, Apple stores are not mere retail stores, they feature a theatre for presentations and workshops, a studio for training with Apple products, and a Genius Bar for technical support and repairs, and also offer free workshops to the public.

The Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Retail will open 10 iStores by the end of the calendar year. Apple would invest in market development, said sources. Confirming the deal, a company executive said the partnership will benefit both. While it would give Apple immediate presence and scale, it would give Reliance Digital mileage as the ‘stores would be co-branded’. Reliance Digital, the consumer electronics chain of the retail venture, so far has only one store which opened earlier this year in the NCR.

Apple currently has few resellers in India but no company-owned store. The company sells its products worldwide through its online stores, retail stores, direct sales force, third-party wholesalers, resellers and value-added resellers.

Apple had 185 stores open as of June 30, 2007. In the Asia-Pacific, Apple has stores in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and India.

Apple’s portable music player, iPod, is also sold at department stores, member-only warehouse stores, large retail chains, and specialty retail stores, apart from Apple stores.

While Reliance faces trouble on the mass fresh produce retail front, it is banking on the tie-up with Apple to cater to the upwardly-mobile consumer segment. Reliance Retail has had to slow down its food and groceries stores rollout plans after facing protests from small traders in states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa in the last one month. The company sacked 1,000 employees in UP after the state government shut 10 Reliance Fresh stores. It later laid off 400 franchisees for its planned retail operations in West Bengal and has also shelved a rollout in Orissa because of protests from small traders.

Reliance Retail unveiled its first stores — fruits and vegetable stores called Reliance Fresh — in November last year.

T-Mobile sells unlocked Apple iPhone

It's finally a fact - Apple iPhone unlocked will be selling officially. We know it's hard to believe but T-Mobile has formally announced it today. And if you are just starting to think it's too good to be true here goes the sobering fact. The handset is going to cost 999 Euro. Yeah, you heard it just right - about $1500 a piece is what T-Mobile is going to charge for the precious unlocked iPhone.

Furthermore, the handset won't be available for online or telephone orders and will only be sold in the telecom's official shops. In case you wondered how come T-Mobile is selling unlocked iPhones just 11 days after the official start of sales in Germany, a court ruling has outlawed the exclusive sales of phones on contract only. With the unlocked handsets costing an arm and a leg, we really wonder if the court decision is of much point really.

The good news is mostly for the customers who bought the iPhone between the 19th of November and the day the first unlocked handsets are released. Their iPhones can be unlocked for free.

In India people we can unlock iPhone for mere Rs 1000 & odd, if you can get iPhone thru known sources from US for $399 or so which amounts to Rs 16,000.

Paying more than 18K for iPhone may not really worth. I am hearing thru other sources that in India iPhones will be sold thru Reliance Stores for Rs 30,000!!!! Not sure when this will happen but hopefully this version will be much more advanced than current iPhone which is behind features list except for interface and capacity.

What is the procedure for unlocking iPhone? I may get one in the next one week to 10 days time. I do have WiFi connection at home.

Do I need to pay anything for releasing the lock of iPhone for using certain services?

Whether using the services of Unlock require any Credit Card charges?

Thanks for your feedback.

Problem for me may be the new iPhones which come with the firmware 1.1.2 for which unlocking procedure is yet to put in place.

They have procedures for iPhones which have been upgraded to 1.1.2 from 1.1.1 but not straight out of the shops with 1.1.2.

I shall take a look at the site.

AT&T CEO Says 3G iPhone Will Be Available Next Year

The 3G iPhone has been naught but a rumor until AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson opened his mouth recently and spilled the beans. Oh, how Steve Jobs must be fuming right now. All Stephenson would commit to is "next year", but that's enough for many.

Though the iPhone has been a good seller since its June 29 debut, there are many who have decided against purchasing it because it is limited to EDGE data networks and can't access faster 3G wireless data speeds. Looks like they won't have to wait too much longer before a 3G version of the iPhone becomes available.

At a meeting in California, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson told reporters that a 3G version will be available next year. He also said that he couldn't say exactly when it will be available, or how much more it will cost than the current version of the iPhone, which sells for $399.

Combining 3G data speeds with a device that can run third-party applications will likely make 2008 a banner year for the iPhone. The SDK for the iPhone will be released in February, and we'll probably have more details come MacWorld in January. Whether or not Jobs will use that event to launch the next version of the iPhone is unknown, but it isn't beyond reason.

Some suggest that the reason the iPhone isn't widely available across Europe is because it isn't 3G. Spain's Telefonica, for example, has reportedly held off on releasing the iPhone until it is 3G enabled because it has only GPRS and HSPA networks running. GPRS is slower than EDGE, and makes for a poor experience.

According to analysts, the number of people who put off buying an iPhone now to wait for a 3G one won't affect immediate iPhone sales too much. With nearly 1.5 million of them already sold, Jobs' original goal of selling 10 million of the converged devices by the end of 2008 is certainly looking like more of a reality.

Ever since the Apple iPhone was released it has been (rightfully) criticized for the lack of video recording capabilities. Or so it was until today as a third-party solution seems to be just around the corner.

The guy from Monster and Friends has just shown a working beta of an application that can actually create videos using the iPhone's camera. What is even more exiting than that is the fact that the videos are captured at 2 megapixel resolution. Yeah, you heard that right - 2 megapixel.

As of now however the framerate is quite low achieving the miserly 10 fps but this is no surprise as at this stage the application is more proof of concept than something really useful. The author however promises that even videos of 40-45 fps could actually be captured with next versions.

A bold promise by all means but we are yet to see if it can actually be fulfilled. As of now the application allows the iPhone to record a 5 second video and replay it right after it is captured. We are yet to see if the promise for a 15-30 fps video at unlimited length will also be kept with the final version.

You can download the iPhone video recording application here - http://monsterandfriends.com/?q=node/50

Apple Sells Close to 5 Million iPhones

Steve Jobs looks all set to have a merry Christmas this year. It would seem as if his goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 is about to be half-achieved.

According to sources, the company is expecting to make a grand announcement at its Macworld Expo in January 2008 to the effect that Jobs' halfway mark in iPhone sales has been achieved. It’s not official yet – I’m sure the figures will be counted and recounted before the official number is announced.

Sales have been apparently been going through the roof and the iPhone has, like Apple’s own iPod, become yet another technological phenomenon. Stay tuned, and have a Merry Christmas.

Apple Boosts iPhone, iPod Touch Capacity

Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/mobile-pho...apacity/28001/0

I’m sure you’ve heard the news, but we thought we'd confirm it in case you had a shadow of a doubt. Yes, the Apple iPhone is now available with a whopping 16GB :Sorprendido: of internal space. It’s out already and available in official Apple stores in the US for Rs 19,670 ($499 before taxes).

As usual the whole planet is waiting with bated breath for Steve Jobs to lower the price. Not that this is going to make much of a difference, I should think.

With the latest Firmware (V1.1.3 ) things are looking up for the iPhone generation. All I can say about the whole situation is this – WHEN DO WE GET IT? If that’s not enough, Apple’s iPod Touch has also been souped up with 32GB of internal memory and will retail for Rs 19,670 ($499 before taxes).

The 8GB version of the iPhone is currently priced at Rs 15,735 ($399) and the 8GB and 16GB iPod Touch models are available for Rs 11,800 ($299) and Rs 15,735 ($399) respectively.

StealthSIMs are avlbl @1200/-. So unlocking a new 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 costs only Rs.1200/-, nothing else. BTW, I am using a 1.0.2 -> 1.1.1 -> 1.1.2 software unlocked iPhone and is simply great. I have been using Nokia for last many years, but as the topic says Now I Love Iphone. :SI:

Waise, I have kept my N95 as a 2nd Phone for backup and camera and occasional GPS. :winko:

As the world impatiently waits for Apple’s iPhone to become like any other mobile out there that can easily be used and thoroughly customized with free applications for business and play, Apple is slowly but surely heading in that direction thankfully. It’s already a known fact that there are plenty of developers out there that have been coming up with iPhone applications on a weekly (if not sooner) basis to help us, as users, achieve the absolution of finally having a totally open iPhone. No strings attached, no more jailbreaking and what not.

Hopefully the day will come when one can simply walk into an Apple or any other store pick up an iPhone and walkout without having to pay anyone extra for making it compatible with your service provider. Just pay over the counter, put in your SIM card and you’re good to go. You won't have to worry about the firmware upgrading or downgrading etc. and most importantly the device Bricking in case you happen to install some third party software. The iPhone may one day be just like a Sony Ericsson or Nokia or Samsung handset. Version 1.1.3 already saw some exciting changes to the iPhone so there's a lot yet to be expected.

Apple has recently previewed its iPhone 2.0 software, scheduled for release this June, and announced the immediate availability of a beta release of the software to select developers and enterprise customers. The iPhone 2.0 beta release includes both the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), the previous one was actually leaked, as well as new enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and the addition of Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to private corporate networks.

"We’re excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

The iPhone SDK provides developers with a rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools to create applications for iPhone and iPod Touch. Starting today, anyone can download the beta iPhone SDK for free and run the iPhone Simulator on their Mac. As we’ve talked about before (link) the SDK will enable developers to come up with their own applications for various purposes to run on the iPhone's MAC OS. With the kind of technology that the iPhone already incorporates like its Multi-Touch user interface, built-in three-axis accelerometer and of course it’s rather large space capacity (now up to 16GB) it may not be too long before developers will make most of our initial expectations from the iPhone a reality.

Apple has licensed Exchange ActiveSync from Microsoft and is building it right into the iPhone, so that iPhone will connect out-of-the-box to Microsoft Exchange Servers 2003 and 2007 for secure over-the-air push email, contacts, calendars and global address lists. Built-in Exchange ActiveSync support also enables security features such as remote wipe, password policies and auto-discovery. The addition of WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1x authentication enables enterprise customers to deploy iPhone and iPod touch with the latest standards for protection of Wi-Fi networks.

iPhone v2.0, Good Stuff to Come

After the news of the launch of the iPhone’s v2.0 firmware (June) with the official SDK, developers are seemingly thrilled and iPhone users obviously more so. With this latest deliverance from Apple, developers have been at the drawing board working frantically to make sure that the iPhone stays at the top by coming up with plenty of ways to enhance the OS with new apps.

Here are a few features that should brighten up an iPhone user's day -

Mass Email Delete

It’s quite odd when you think about it that Apple, in its first try would not incorporate a feature like this their very first try. Then again they left a lot out. So with the latest firmware ready to be out in June, those of you iPhone users who use their device for emailing can rejoice, your cluttered up mail will be much easier to get rid off now than ever before, so instead of getting irked by the singular deletion feature you’ll able to pretty much wipe all your junk clean with a wave of your hand (quite literally as you can imagine thanks to multi-touch).

Bonjour

This system allows iPhone users to connect computers and other iPhones on a given network. Just like you would connect to other devices using Bluetooth by searching and connecting, Bonjour will be able to do the same on a network.

Full-Screen Mode on Safari

Another feature that should have made it in the first round and didn’t was a full-page web browser. The Safari browser, may be brilliant and all and occupy a good 90 percent of the iPhone's superb display, but hey, why have 90% when you can have it all right?

Scalable Vector Graphics and New CSS Effects

The iPhone, with the latest firmware, would also have SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). So files can be compressed and their original resolutions can be maintained. The new firmware will also support CSS effects, which works like Flash for animations, effects etc.

PowerPoint Support

The iPhone would also have support to view PowerPoint presentations with the next upgrade.

Locally Stored Web-Apps

Users will also be able to store web-apps on their handsets and use them offline. According to Apple the latest firmware version would also be able to support functional web client-side database API when the network isn’t running.

Search

The iPhone will also be getting a search option for looking up contacts and other information on the device.

With these features in mind, which are seemingly just the tip of the iceberg, the anticipation for the iPhone to hit India is only getting more than just difficult to bear. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take too long or we’ll be seeing one only once a v3.0 is out. I don’t think India can wait that long Mr. Jobs.
