Arun 795 Report post Posted August 2, 2007 If you do not have much travelling to do, then defenitely a desktop is better... more speed and lesser maintenance cost. An Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Dual Core 3 Ghz processor.... with Intel 965 mother board... 2 GB DDR 2 667 Mhz RAM... 250 GB SATAII Hard Disk will rock (more than enough for home use actually and you can use Windows Vista on the above configuration without any issues). Since you are in Chennai, I guess AirTel Broadband will be good... go for an unlimited 256 connection at Rs.1000 + tax per month. If you have a BSNL landline, then you can try BSNL DataOne's Home 500 plan, Rs.500 + tax /month for 2 mbps connection (2.5 GB data transfer per month during day time and unlimited between 2 AM to 8 AM). Dj 25 Report post Posted August 2, 2007 consider it as a flowchart... IDENTIFICATION OF NEED/USAGE | BUDGET | DESIRED/RELEVANT/AVAILABLE CONFIG | ASSEMBLED/BRANDED now once u have these in mind... make your decision... adding to what arun has suggested above, buying whats 'IN' or 'LATEST', instead buy what u can exploit(read put to full use)... there are a lot of great things... depends whether their greatness applys and aligns to ur need... so give us an insight into how u plan to use the comp and everyone here would be willing to help u decide then... raccoon 53 Report post Posted August 2, 2007 If portablity is not really required than a desktop is way better than a laptop for several reasons. The most important factor for me is that I can asseble the rig with the best known components ...and also maintain it myself. I dont know about chennai ...but I'v had a VERY, VERY bad experience with Hathway here in Poona. Im currently using BSNL and while it works it rocks (downtime is almost nil) ...but support is very bad.
coolrajiv 1 Report post Posted August 3, 2007 If you r a frequent traveler than Laptop is a must otherwise Desktop PC. keep in mind a desktop PC has a better life than a Laptop. For the internet connection u have many choices i would suggest Reliance & Tata Indicom based on my experience.
